Understanding Alaska (UA) is a special series of research studies examining Alaska economic development issues. ISER began this work in 2001, when Mark Hamilton, the president of the University of Alaska, made funds available from the University of Alaska Foundation. Learning about issues related to economic development is crucial as Alaskans work to build a healthy economy for the future.
Understanding Alaska Choices: This is the current phase of the Understanding Alaska initiative. With additional funding made available by UA president Mark Hamilton and the UA board of regents in 2006, ISER is studying several broad areas in which Alaskans will face important choices in the coming years. Those include health care, fisheries, rural development, energy, climate change, and education.
